One final transfer. Is this global OB fee normal? I’m currently 16 weeks pregnant and seeing an OB at Ascension Seton. They gave me a global OB estimate of $7,000 (not including hospital bills, labs, ultrasounds) and want to collect my full deductible amount of $3,500 at 28 weeks (even though I have almost hit my deductible at this point). I have UHC insurance and my OOP Max is $7,900. Is this a normal amount for the global OB fee? Would it be worth it to “shop around”? It just seems very high from what I’ve heard from others in Austin but it also sounds like this is the new norm and it would be similar anywhere I go. Do I have any choice other than to just pay it and fight to get a refund right after I’ve given birth?

Is it really that hard to get in? I’m a non traditional applicant. I will be applying Spring 2027 for matriculation 2028 as long as I don’t bomb my MCAT. I’m 27, went back to school 2 years ago and had a lot of general courses done from when I was 17/18 and let me just say it was Cs and Ds…. I didn’t try, was big on partying, and had no idea where I was going with my life. By the time I apply to med school my cumulative GPA will be around 3.4. My return to school GPA is 3.8 and science GPA 3.75. I’m honors, have 5000 + clinical hours with performance awards from Ascension Seton, letters of rec from professors and doctors who I’ve worked as a medical assistant for, 50 hours volunteering within and outside of medicine, one QI research project conducted in clinic, 100 hours of leadership training new medical assistants. I know the MCAT would be a huge factor and doing pooorly would change my plans but I see all the time people talking about how ridiculously difficult it is to get in with these higher GPAs and excellent MCAT scores. Am I delusional for thinking I can do this??

Where to go for Imaging Just sharing that I recently got a echocardiogram. After calling Ascension Seton with BCBS it was $612 vs $143 @ Central Park Imaging. Central park imaging seems to be the cheapest in Austin from what I've gathered. I am not affiliated in any way, just thought I would share. About 20 minutes of work saved me $450.

Ascension Seton - Global Billing Practices Hi parents who have delivered at Ascension Seton! A few years back I had my first at BSW Lakeway. It was great all around, and I didn't have to pay anything toward my birth before hand. Just prenatal appointments/ultrasounds. I will say BSW did call toward the end of my pregnancy and request a "Good Faith" payment ahead of time towards my birth, to which I refused. I'd rather be in the position where I owed the hospital money, not the other way around. Can you imagine trying to get a refund from a hospital?! Ha! Well, for #2 I have transferred over to Ascension Seton Downtown due to the BSW Lakeway L&D unit closure, and I am just shocked at how financial this whole baby delivery thing is over at Seton. The first thing they do is shove a paper in front of you outlining the cost of delivery. Apparently, I have to pay the full price (labeled as deposit) after insurance coverage of my birth (next Feb '27) before I hit 28 weeks. They said it is due to their Global Billing Practices. Is there a work around this? Does anyone have an tips on how to delay payment? I don't know what my insurance will look like next year, but having put down a few K ahead of time doesn't sit right to me. Maybe the rest of the US does this, but just comparing it to my first experience, I feel rubbed a bit wrong.
