2K engagementsEnding the HIV Epidemic in Texas: A Call to Action
Scientific breakthroughs have transformed HIV from a death sentence in the 1980s and 90s to a manageable chronic illness today. However, HIV remains an epidemic in the United States that can be prevented. In Texas alone, 72,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS, and 14,000 are unaware of their status. Houston leads the state with nearly 21,500 infections.
The largest risk group for male cases is men who have sex with men, with African-American men having the highest number of new diagnoses. African-American women are newly diagnosed at a rate 21 times higher than white women and almost six times higher than Hispanic women.
Challenges to ending the epidemic include stigma, machismo, religion, and economic and housing issues, along with the misconception that HIV is only a “gay disease” in communities of color.
The Long-Term Solution
Aligned with the national strategy to end HIV, Texas must focus on treatment and prevention. This includes ensuring everyone who is HIV positive maintains their medications and wellness, promoting condom use, and raising awareness of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).
With support from the Ford Foundation and AIDS United, Legacy Community Health is spearheading a citywide “End New Diagnoses” campaign. This initiative aims to reduce new HIV transmissions in Houston by half in five years through prevention and treatment, using an intersectional approach tailored to Houston’s diverse population and programs like the Positive Organizing Project.
At the statewide level, Legacy is working towards:
- Passing legislation for syringe exchange programs to prevent injection-related HIV infections.
- Ending the criminalization of people living with HIV.
- Fully funding the Texas HIV Medication Program to provide lifesaving drugs.
Together, we can overcome these challenges and end the HIV epidemic in Texas.

330 engagementsWhat an incredible day of community, care, and connection! 💙 On May 16th, the Lambda Zeta Chapter’s Health and Social Action committee officially Rocked the Block! We brought vital resources straight to Houston, and we are so proud to share that more than 100 participants joined us. Together, we got neighbors registered to vote, provided critical health screenings, and connected families to the support they need.
A massive thank you to our Adopt-a-School partner, Collins Elementary in Alief ISD, for collaborating with us to make this event a major success. Here is a look at the real-time impact we made:
🩺 Health & Wellness: Neighbors got their blood pressure and glucose tested on-site thanks to Legacy Community Health! We also provided essential lead testing, prenatal support, and mental health services.
🗳️ Civic Action & Safety: We got community members registered to vote and poll-ready! Attendees also met local representatives face-to-face at our Candidate Forum and discussed gun violence prevention with Moms Demand Action.
🏛️Community Resources: Families received crucial, direct information and assistance regarding Medicaid, Medicare eligibility, and Harris County services.
This event wouldn’t have been possible without the hands-on dedication of our Elder Care Committee, Stork’s Nest Committee, and our amazing Archonettes, who all showed up to serve.
Thank you, Houston, for showing up and doing the work to build a stronger, healthier community together! 🕊️✨
