Twenty years ago (ish). I moved to Dallas in August 2005. I had never really been out of Arkansas except for the occasional trip to Florida or other short vacation. I was beyond excited to leave what I had always known but also was very nervous as a 22 year-old Arkansan without a GPS or a smartphone! I stopped by UT Southwestern while I was in Dallas this week and reminisced my time in medical school. It was crazy to see the lecture halls and the hallways that I thought I would forget, but almost instantly remembered. Everything looked almost exactly as it did 20 years ago. But the new Parkland Hospital is absolutely beautiful and I’m sure it’s the same level of feeling like you’re in the trenches of medicine in there as the old one where I trained. It’s crazy how much medical education has changed. When I was there, we had paper syllabi, and I left medical school with two massive tupperware containers full of paper syllabi that had been written on, highlighted and tabbed meticulously. I also went to almost every single lecture while I was there as there was no virtual option. Now the whole world including medical education is digital and virtual. Going to school UT Southwestern, one of the top medical schools in the country, is something that I will always be grateful for. While in Dallas, following the church service, we had the opportunity to take an insightful tour of Parkland Hospital, which is a public health facility known for its service to the community. Under the guidance of Programme Director Joanne Muturi, we explored key departments including the Emergency Room, Ambulance Bay, Psychiatric Emergency Unit, and the Medical ICU. The visit offered a firsthand experience of how the hospital delivers critical care. Healthcare should go beyond talk. It must reflect dignity, empathy, and a commitment to healing both body and mind. Patients deserve more than treatment; they need comfort, peace, and assurance. In any well-governed society, no patient or their loved ones should bear the burden of unaffordable bills or broken systems. Access to quality care is not a privilege, it is a right.

DALLAS - A Dallas ISD police officer was shot while trying to help someone near the Walmart and Sam’s Club stores in Northwest Dallas on Thursday morning. The officer-involved shooting happened around 11 a.m. outside the shopping center off the LBJ Freeway near Midway Road. Images from SKY 4 showed dozens of police vehicles from multiple agencies in the store parking lot and in the alleyways near the scene. Crime scene tape surrounded a police vehicle and blood stains. Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez confirmed the injured officer is one of his officers – 39-year-old Officer Justin Jones, who is assigned to White High School and has been with the department for 16 years. Officer Jones was taken to Parkland Hospital with a critical gunshot wound to the leg. He is currently in surgery, the chief said. A possible suspect was taken into custody. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said the shooting happened after Officer Jones was flagged down and intercepted someone who was in crisis on the LBJ Freeway. He took that person to the parking lot to get him out of danger. "After he got to this parking lot, he was trying to talk to the person who is now a suspect. He was getting out the car, and then we had a shooting that occurred. The officer was shot," Chief Comeaux said. "He was helping somebody in crisis, as we expect the officers to serve in the community. And we're grateful to all the help that we have received. He's in our prayers. We're thankful. We thank Parkland, the amazing surgeons there at the trauma center that do what they do," Chief Martinez added. Martinez asked the community to pray for Jones and his family, as well as a second Dallas ISD officer who arrived at the scene shortly afterward and applied a life-saving tourniquet. Officials have not yet released any information about the suspect's identity. Details about what led to the shooting and how Jones and the suspect arrived in the parking lot together have not been shared. This shooting does not appear to be related to another officer-involved shooting that happened around the same time just a few miles away in a North Dallas neighborhood.

Parkland I don’t see a lot of people talking about this one, but I picked it up at a secondhand store and I liked it a lot. It’s all about the story of the people involved after the Kennedy assassination like the Parkland Hospital doctors, Abraham Zapruder, the FBI, Secret Service, even the Oswald family. It’s not conspiratorial at all - just very grounded. A stacked cast too. And the video quality is excellent. Highly recommend.
