Congrats! 🎉 Texas Health Resources is proud to recognize Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth for a national achievement – and for providing North Texans with a quality neuroscience program. Texas Health Fort Worth is one of just 70 hospitals across the nation recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review. The publication released its 2023 edition of "Hospitals and health systems with spine and neuroscience programs to know" list. According to Becker’s, the honorees “are committed to improving patient outcomes, conducting trailblazing research and expanding access to care.” Two neurosurgeons on the Texas Health Fort Worth medical staff serve key roles. Olaide Ajayi, M.D., is the Spine Program medical director, and Christopher Shank, M.D., serves as the Neurotrauma Program medical director. HEB TEXAS HEALTH RESOURCES BEDFORD I truly cannot say enough GREAT things about HEB Hospital in Bedford, Texas, after what we experienced yesterday. ❤️ A little backstory: the night before, my boyfriend Ted had cooked ribs on the grill. He has had some pretty scary choking incidents in the past, but this was BY FAR the worst one we have ever experienced. A large piece of meat became lodged in his esophagus, and we knew something was seriously wrong. I got him in the car and took him to Medical City Argyle ER. They were good to us, but they weren't equipped to handle what Ted needed, so they transferred him to Medical City Denton. Unfortunately, that experience was a nightmare for us. Our nurse Aaron was pretty good, but beyond that, we felt completely lost and incredibly frustrated. Ted was suffering, we were told there was no GI doctor available until morning, and I felt like there was no urgency surrounding what was happening to him. Eventually, I looked at my phone, realized how much time had passed and that we were still waiting, and I lost it. I walked into the hallway and said, "Get the IV out of his arm, or I will." We left AMA. From there, I took him to another hospital, but after feeling like the seriousness of his condition still wasn't being recognized, I put him right back in the car. That decision led us to HEB Hospital in Bedford — and THANK GOD it did. From the moment we arrived, they recognized the urgency. They got Ted back quickly, started testing him, and began figuring out what needed to happen. Then came Ashley from the GI team. She came rolling down the hallway with a smile, completely down-to-earth, and met us exactly where we were. There was no judgment and no making us feel like we were being dramatic. She was simply KIND, reassuring and ready to help. She got Ted downstairs and prepped immediately. We met the phenomenal anesthesia team, and before long, they were taking him back to remove what I can only describe as a MONSTER of an impaction from his esophagus — something that had become a very serious medical situation. Then I met Brianna, another incredible nurse who treated us like HUMAN BEINGS. She genuinely cared about both of us and helped me every step of the way while I waited. And then Dr. Shae came out to speak with me. He was kind, knowledgeable and took the time to explain what had happened. He told me that in roughly 23 years of practicing medicine, he had never seen an impaction this large. He worked tirelessly for approximately AN HOUR AND A HALF to get it out. I don't even have the words to express how grateful I am. Ashley. Brianna. Dr. Shae. The anesthesia team. The ER staff who recognized that Ted needed help quickly. THANK YOU. ❤️ You took a frightening situation and made us feel like we mattered. You treated Ted like a person instead of just another patient in a bed, and you treated me like a scared loved one who deserved compassion and answers. If you ever find yourself dealing with a serious esophageal food impaction or need emergency GI care, ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. Ask questions. Speak up when something doesn't feel right. And based on our experience, I would make the drive to HEB Hospital in Bedford again without hesitation. Ashley and Brianna, you two were truly angels from above. ❤️ And to Dr. Shae and the entire team who took care of Ted: THANK YOU for getting that monster out of his throat and taking such incredible care of him. I will never forget the kindness you showed us. 🙏❤️
